Oob

Back to profiles

Resembling in some ways an average soft-skinned humanoid, their peoples is one of a naive disposition that creates tourists and artisans whose child-like works of imagination have captivated galactic curiosity almost as effectively as their smiling oversized heads. Originating on Ba-ooba, a world of grand size and curiously underdeveloped gravitational strength, the Oob were able from the first dawnings of their intelligence to trek all across their home world. At this point relying on little more than perfect memories and an innate sense of direction (both afforded to them by way of their enormous heads), the species came to have mapped out the whole of their temperate home in just a few short centuries of passionate exploration. An excitable people who are often noted for their mild manners and initial shyness, Oob are possessed of a trusting nature which extends almost to every individual of the species. Part of what has made them so loveable to others, it is this disposition which more than anything else seems to have kept Ba-ooba clean. Inhabited by a scarce few other creatures, all of whom are capable of living on every quarter of its surface, the planet is rich with natural resources and ripe for exploitation. Most valuable to the Oob however is its natural beauty, an endless series of picturesque hillside views over winding rivers and rolling fields that inspired their wandering nature in the first place, and drove many of their earliest ancestors to attempt complete planetary circumnavigation. This was a particularly demanding ordeal for a people of such scanty technological knowhow, but they managed it with enthusiasm - being instilled with a passionate drive to travel every vista for themselves.

Surprisingly long-lived, the average Oob will survive into their mid two hundreds, only starting to experience the effects of age around their bi-centennial birthdays. They did not have strict methods of time-keeping to record this until very recently however, and historically referred to events according to the number of days gone by since their passage. This is simple for them on account of their reliable memories. Otherwise very unremarkable in appearance, they have rectangular heads which are wider than they are tall, inside housing large brains and a peculiar orthogonal skull which otherwise resembles that of an average humanoid. The geometric perfection of their oblong heads is slightly jarring, and whose bevelled edges somehow communicate a softness at the same time. Their features are arranged on faces of extreme flatness (save for their ears that are located correspondingly on the left and right), adding further to the kind of disbelief and whimsy that is expressed on learning about the Oob for the first time. Newcomers to galactic society, they were seized with great excitement after learning about the immense scope of the galaxy and set very quickly to exploring it in the methodical way that they are now famous for. Individuals were sent one at a time to distant planets and tasked with navigating all over them, communicating by way of primitive transmissions to broadcast reports and images back to the centre of their society on Ba-ooba. This is a modest structure whose clay exterior hides within its vast subterranean wings endless bundles of parchment that by some accounts are the most accurate traditional maps of the galaxy. While there was some concern at first that Oob explorers would meet violent ends, the species has proven remarkably adept at earning the adoration of the people they encounter, and a lot of the time even end up with travelling companions.

Never really advancing beyond a medieval level of technological development, material conditions on Ba-ooba are very good regardless and it is theorised that this deficit is born more out of their interest in other areas than in ignorance. Some theories even exist that their substantial intellects are simply unsuited for rigorous application. Regardless the species has taken to using certain very simple devices that allow for long distance communication, but otherwise have found that they are perfectly happy in their simple way of life. Spending most of it in small hamlets that they only inhabit part-time, being occasionally called away by the promise of adventure so that each of their settlements is perpetually sleepy and only part way full. They continue to wear clothing that has been abandoned elsewhere, frequently have to patch up their outfits where the thin fabric rips or tears - a practice that is quite novel elsewhere and can cause considerable confusion. This is in part because these materials are inadequate for exploration in space and were abandoned long ago by other species. Whatever the reason why, their outfits are very old fashioned and look like they belong in a museum somewhere recording the history of an ancient feudal world, driving home the Oob’s unfamiliarity with the stars.
